There has been a parish church in Portmoak since 1243, when a newly renovated chapel was dedicated on the shores of Loch Leven. For 400 years that building served as the parish church, but by 1636 the building was in an almost ruinous state of repair. However, it was not until 1661 that a replacement building opened for worship on the site of the present church. In 1830 it was found that the roof timbers of that building were in such a state of decay as to be very unsafe. The church we know today was built on the same site and opened for worship in 1832.
