|
Historic city centre church. First mentioned in documents 1126. Re-consecrated by bishop David de Bernham in 1242. Earliest parts of existing building date from 15th century. Central tower was the model for St. Machar’s, Aberdeen. John Knox preached in the Kirk in 1559, and the Scottish Reformation was well and truly begun. After Reformation the building was divided into three separate churches - East, Middle and West. Restored in 1923 by Sir Robert Lorimer as a War Memorial and became one congregation again. Major fund-raising by Trust for St. John’s Kirk in 1983 enabled a planned programme of restoration of stained glass to be carried out
