Fowlis Wester Church

The Church was the gift of Gilbert, Earl of Strathearn and has served the parish for seven centuries. In the course of restoration in 1927, a Pictish Symbol Stone was discovered embedded in the wall and was thought to date back to St Bean who came from Ireland to this part of Scotland to preach the Gospel, hence the reference to the Church of St Bean. St Bean died in 720AD. Inside the church is the 8th/9th century Pictish stone which stood for centuries in the village square. Today a replica takes its place. |
